How to tell if your partner no longer loves you: 7 signs
7 signs your partner may have stopped loving you—recognize them before it’s too late. Learn the warning signs that could indicate your relationship is heading toward a breakup, even before you hear the words, “I don’t love you anymore.”
How Can You Tell If Your Partner’s Feelings Have Faded? 7 Key Signs
My name is Robert Marchel. I’ve been helping people save their relationships for more than 17 years, and everything I’m going to share with you is based on extensive experience working with couples and relationships.
Sign #1: Lack of Physical Affection
Your partner has stopped seeking physical closeness with you.
They no longer touch you, come over to kiss you, or initiate a hug. Even when you’re the one who initiates physical contact, you may get the feeling that your touch isn’t particularly welcome.
There is a noticeable physical distance between you.
If affection and physical closeness used to be a natural part of your relationship and have now largely disappeared, it can be a strong sign that your partner’s feelings toward you have changed.
Sign #2: They’re No Longer Interested in Your Life
Your partner no longer seems interested in your personal life or in what is happening with you.
They don’t ask how you’re doing, how your day went, how you’re feeling, or whether something is bothering you.
You may even notice that when you try to talk about these things yourself, your partner seems bored, distracted, or simply uninterested.
When someone who used to be genuinely curious about your life stops showing that interest, it can indicate growing emotional distance.
Sign #3: They Avoid Spending Time With You
Your partner actively avoids spending time together.
Whenever there’s an opportunity for the two of you to do something together, they would rather play video games, watch a TV series, meet up with friends, or find almost anything else to do instead.
As a result, the amount of quality time you spend together becomes increasingly limited.
Of course, everyone needs time for themselves. But when avoiding time together becomes a consistent pattern, it may signal that your partner is emotionally withdrawing from the relationship.
Sign #4: They Have No Interest in Fixing Your Problems
Your partner no longer seems interested in addressing the problems in your relationship.
When you tell them something isn’t right, ask to talk, or explain that you’re unhappy with the way things are between you, they may remain silent, avoid the conversation, or try to end it as quickly as possible.
What’s missing is any real willingness to understand what’s bothering you or to work together to improve the relationship.
When one partner stops caring about solving problems altogether, it can be a significant warning sign that they have emotionally disengaged from the relationship.
Sign #5: They’ve Become Indifferent to Your Feelings
Your partner is becoming increasingly indifferent to your feelings and emotions.
In a healthy relationship where two people love each other and want to be together, one person’s sadness or distress will usually matter to the other.
When your partner sees that you’re upset, they may ask what happened, try to comfort you, or ask what they can do to make things better.
That doesn’t mean they have to solve every problem for you. But your emotions matter to them.
A strong warning sign appears when that concern is replaced by genuine indifference.
Your partner can see that you’re hurting, sad, or even crying—and does nothing.
When this becomes a recurring pattern, it may indicate that your partner has emotionally distanced themselves from you to a significant degree.
Sign #6: They Stop Making Plans for the Future With You
Your partner stops planning any kind of future together.
And I’m not just talking about major decisions such as getting married, having children, buying a home, or moving somewhere new.
It can also show up in much smaller things.
Perhaps they no longer want to discuss where you could go on vacation together or what you could do several months from now.
What’s even more concerning is when you try to make plans and repeatedly encounter resistance.
If this sounds familiar, there is a possibility that your partner is already imagining a future in which the two of you are no longer together—and that may be exactly why they are reluctant to make plans.
Sign #7: You’re the Only Person Fighting for the Relationship
You feel as though you’re the only person keeping the relationship alive.
You’re the one initiating conversations. You’re the one trying to spend time together. You’re the one trying to solve problems and restore closeness.
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you know that if you stopped making all that effort, the relationship might have fallen apart a long time ago.
If that describes your situation, it may be another indication that your partner is seriously considering ending the relationship.
What Should You Do Next?
The more of these signs you recognize in your relationship, the greater the possibility that your relationship may unfortunately be heading toward a breakup.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean the situation cannot be turned around.
At our Institute of Relationship Psychology, we work with people whose relationships have already ended—including situations where only one person wants to save the relationship and the other person openly says it’s over and that they no longer love them.
If those words haven’t been spoken yet, you may have even more room to change the situation.
But you need to start focusing on what actually works.
That doesn’t necessarily mean trying harder, begging your partner to stay, or attempting to logically convince them to love you again. It means understanding the emotional dynamics between you and learning how to influence them in a healthier and more effective way.
